Kinama Hill, Burundi

High above Lake Tanganyika in the mountains of western Burundi, Kinama Hill is home to one of the country's most exciting coffee projects: Migoti Coffee Company. Founded with a mission to connect smallholder farmers to specialty markets, Migoti works directly with farming communities across the surrounding hillsides, helping improve quality, transparency, and long-term sustainability.

This lot is produced from cherries grown by hundreds of smallholder farmers cultivating coffee on small family plots between 1,700 and 1,900 MASL, where cool temperatures and slow maturation create exceptional sweetness and complexity.

Process: Natural, Patiently Crafted

Natural processing in Burundi is never easy.

Kinama Hill's unique microclimate brings cooler temperatures, more rainfall, and slower drying conditions than many East African origins. While challenging for producers, this extended drying period allows flavours to develop gradually, creating greater depth and complexity in the cup.

Process Flow

  • Selectively hand-picked ripe cherries
  • Careful sorting and defect removal
  • Slow drying on raised African beds
  • Frequent turning and moisture monitoring
  • Resting and conditioning before milling

The result is a natural coffee that balances fruit intensity with remarkable cleanliness.

Variety: Red Bourbon

Like many of Burundi's finest coffees, this lot is produced from Red Bourbon.

Known for its:

  • Dense sweetness
  • Elegant acidity
  • Structured body
  • Complex fruit character

Red Bourbon thrives in Burundi's high-altitude conditions, producing coffees that are often compared to the best of neighbouring Rwanda while maintaining a distinctive identity.

Cup Experience: Candy Meets Complexity

Kinama Hill Natural is a coffee that feels playful and sophisticated at the same time.

Expect layers of:

  • Red berries
  • Peach
  • Honey
  • Candied fruit
  • Cola-like sweetness

Underneath the vibrant fruit is a silky texture and soft acidity that keeps everything beautifully balanced. Many roasters describe a candy-like sweetness reminiscent of red sweets and ripe stone fruit.

Think:

Red berries, peach nectar, and honey wrapped in a clean natural profile.

Why Coffee Nerds Love Burundi Naturals

Burundi naturals often sit in a sweet spot between Ethiopian fruit intensity and Rwandan structure.

You get:

  • Vibrant berry notes
  • Bourbon sweetness
  • Floral complexity
  • Clean, refined acidity

Coffee enthusiasts frequently praise Burundi naturals for delivering juicy fruit character while remaining remarkably elegant and balanced.

Brewing Mindset

This coffee rewards sweetness-focused extractions:

  • Filter brewing highlights berry and peach complexity
  • Espresso produces rich fruit syrup and honey sweetness
  • Allow the cup to cool for additional layers of fruit and florals

The slower you drink it, the more it reveals.

The Bigger Picture

Migoti Coffee Company is proving that specialty coffee can be a vehicle for community development. Beyond coffee quality, the company invests in farmer education, financing initiatives, and local infrastructure projects that improve life throughout the Kinama community.

This is a coffee built on both quality and impact.

Sweet.
Juicy.
Distinctly Burundi.
