V60 Specialty Coffee Starter Kit
by Yellow Jacket Team
Now that you’ve figured out what it takes for a coffee to be classified as “Specialty Coffeeâ€, what next? Start drinking specialty coffee from as many different origins as you can! You need to train your nose to smell aromas, your eyes to see good, clean extractions, and (most importantly) your tastebuds… to taste the various notes you’ve unlocked by doing a great pour!
To help you get on your way, we recommend our V60 Specialty Coffee Starter Kit (which can be ordered here) as it contains everything you’ll need to get those sensory skills on the right track:
- 1 x Hario V60 single-cup dripper (plastic, so it’s durable)
- 1 x Hario Coffee measuring scoop
- 40 x Hario V60 filter papers
- 4 x 75g of Yellow Jacket specialty coffee, pre-ground specifically for V60 brewing
- 1 x recipe card to guide you through the process
The V60 is a V-shaped filter apparatus with 60 degree angled walls. A bunch of Research and development has gone into it, from flow rate, to the little ridges along the inside enabling air flow. It is widely used by specialty coffee drinkers on all levels of their respective “coffee journeysâ€, and is one of the most raw forms of enjoying all the wonders of specialty coffee.
Already ordered yours? Here’s a little step-by-step guide on how to use your new kit…
What you’ll need:
- V60 Specialty Coffee Starter Kit
- Kettle
- A scale to measure the weight of your pour

Steps to follow

First up, insert a filter paper into the V60

Using the measuring scoop, add 1 scoop of ground coffee (fill to the indicator line) into the filter paper, ensuring the coffee bed is level by shaking the v60 until this is achieved. Place your cup/beaker onto a scale and then place the V60 onto the cup, as shown

Boil the water and allow to rest for up to 1 minute (+/- 93°C). Pour 60ml of water over the ground coffee, ensuring that you saturate all the grounds – this is referred to as the “bloom phaseâ€. Wait 30 seconds, and then begin to slowly pour the remaining 160ml of water (total of 220ml) over the coffee “bedâ€, allowing the water to draw through the coffee and filter paper and into your cup.

Remove V60 once water has completely drawn through, discard the filter paper and used grounds

Now enjoy!
Remember to take note of the aromas and visuals while preparing your V60 drink, as this will almost certainly vary from 1 coffee to the next. New to V60? Seasoned V60 drinker? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below😊
